Her father died at a young age so her mother had to work as a seamstress to feed her family. Matilde studied at the school the Immaculate Conception of the Sisters of Charity. She is most popularly known to be an Ecuadorian physician, poet, and activist. 

Matilde Hidalgo was the first woman in Ecuador (and Latin America) who fought for the right to vote for women. She was the first woman in Ecuador who receive a Doctorate in Medicine. Matilde Hidalgo is the most popular name in the history of Ecuador, who fought for the recognition of women's rights there. 

She was the first woman who voted in the election of Latin America. She was the first woman to graduate from high school in Ecuador. Matilde Hildalgo was the first woman in Ecuador who hold the elected office in her country. 

She used to love writing, reading, and playing with the piano, she had become a master of writing, reading, and playing piano when she was young. She got a sudden paralyzed stroke in 1973 and dead in Guayaquil on February 20, 1974.

Matilde Hidalgo de Procel was born in Loja, Southern Ecuador, on 29 September 1889. She grew up in Loja, southern Ecuador. There were for children to her parents, her father died, when she was a child so her mother had to work to feed her family as a seamstress.

After completing her sixth grade she told her older brother Antonio that she wants to study further, so Antonio made the request to secular high school Colegio Bernardo Valdivieso. After taking about one month, the director of the school Angel Rubén Ojeda agreed to take her to his school. 

Although after her admission her community people's reaction was not very positive, she had to face rejection from the local people after attending the high school. The local priest also forced her to listen to the mass from the two-step outside of the church entrance. Not only the priest but her mother also stopped their daughters from befriending her. 

Nevertheless, Matilde's mother staunchly defended her. And after facing all the obstacles and problems she became the first woman to graduate from high school in Ecuador. 

Later when she applied to the  Central University of Ecuador, her application was rejected just because she was a woman. According to the dean of the medicine faculty, she should focus on building the home and having children. 

So later in 1919, she traveled to Azuay and graduated with honors in medicine at the University of Cuenca. In 1921, she came back to Quito to Central University of Ecuador, due to her bachelor's degree she was accepted for her doctorate program. 

And later she was also awarded a doctorate due to being the first woman in Ecuador. 

After two years of receiving her doctorate award, she got married to the lawyer Fernando Procel. By which couple got two children named Fernando and Gonzalo Procel. In which one child became Fernando became a doctor and Goznzalo Procel became an Architect. 

And in 1974 she died due to parlayed and complications of an early stroke at the age of 85, she was in  Guayaquil, Ecuador in her last days. After her death, a museum was established in Loja about her memories and achievements.

Until 1949, she practiced medicine in the Guayaquil, when she received a scholarship to study Pediatrics, Neurology and Dietetics in Argentina.
