Lili Elbe Biography: Lili Ilse Elvenes, also known as Lili Elbe, was a transgender woman from Denmark who painted. She underwent sex reassignment surgery in the early 1900s. Lili Elbe died on September 13, 1931.

As Einar Wegener, her birth name, she achieved fame as a painter. She stopped painting and changed her legal name to Lili Ilse Elvenes in 1930 after transitioning; she eventually took the last name Elbe.

She passed away as a result of uterus transplant difficulties. Her semi-autobiographical story was released posthumously in the UK and the US in 1933 under the title Man into Woman: An Authentic Record of a Change of Sex.

According to information regarding her wife Gerda Gottlieb, Elbe was married in 1904 while she was still a college student, making the 1882 date more likely to be accurate. Career details of Lili Elbe: Elbe and Gerda Gottlieb married in 1904, when Gottlieb was 19 and Elbe was 22, at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where they had met as students. As the son of a Lutheran church vicar, Gerda hailed from a traditional home.

They both worked as artists, with Gottlieb illustrating books and fashion publications and Elbe specialising in landscape paintings.

Before moving in Paris in 1912, they travelled across Italy and France. Elbe could live more openly as a woman there by assuming the role of Gottlieb's sister-in-law. Elbe displayed her artwork at the Artists' Fall Exhibition (Kunstnernes Efterrsudstilling) in 1907, at the Vejle Art Museum in Denmark, where she is still represented, and in the Saloon and Salon d'Automne in Paris.

After discovering that she liked the stockings and heels she wore to stand in for Gottlieb's model, actress Anna Larssen [da], who once was late for a sitting, Elbe began dressed in women's clothing. Larssen proposed the name Lili, and by the 1920s, Elbe was frequently seen as a woman going places under that identity, attending events, and hosting visitors in her home. Gottlieb rose to fame as a result of her paintings of elegantly attired, stunning women with mesmerising almond-shaped eyes. Elbe served as the inspiration for these representations of diminutive femmes fatales. Following her shift, Elbe gave up painting.

Elbe travelled to Germany in 1930 to have very experimental sex reassignment surgery. Over the course of two years, a series of four surgeries were performed. Erwin Gohrbandt removed the testicles in the first operation, which was carried out in Berlin under the direction of sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld.

Kurt Warnekros, a physician at the Dresden Municipal Women's Clinic, performed the remainder of her operations. In the second procedure, an ovary was implanted into her abdominal muscles, and in the third, the penis and scrotum were removed.

Her situation had already made headlines in German and Danish newspapers at this point.

After the couple's marriage was declared null and void by a Danish court in October 1930, Elbe was able to officially change her name and sex as well as get a passport under the name Lili Ilse Elvenes. Danish writer Louise "Loulou" Lassen of Copenhagen initially adopted the pseudonym "Lili Elbe" in an article for Politiken in February 1931. Elbe went back to Dresden and started seeing Claude Lejeune, a French art dealer, with whom she hoped to get married and have children.

She underwent her fourth surgery to implant a uterus and create a vaginal canal in 1931. A few weeks after Dora Richter underwent the experimental treatment, she became one of the first transgender women to have a vaginoplasty surgery.
